Review Of Sofitel Mauritius L'Imperial Resort & Spa

If you are a vegetarian like me, DON'T GO there. I've done it once. I won't do it again. While the people I wrote to before going there told me that there are always vegetarian dishes at every meal, the truth is different as one some nights, I found myself eating a plate of plain rice along with potato chips and a saute of boiled vegetables. While this is vegetarian food indeed, I wouldn't consider it as quality food deserving 5 stars. The 5 stars is not meant for vegetarians. The second night, I ate rice again with beans soup.....On my last night, I tried to go to the second restaurant which they called Ming because it's a chinese one. I was told that I had to reserve my entry there in advance. Please note that the restaurant was almost empty there. But I didn't reserve in advance, so no possibility to go in. There was one night when it was supposed to be a Sea Food theme buffet. One of the guests ask the staff what do people who do not eat sea food do then, the lady told the guest to walk around and look for stuff that he can eat! On that night, all I ate was Puree de pomme de terre because almost all of the dishes were fish or meat based.
I won't talk about the animation there because I've been bored to death. In most hotels I've been, part of the animation takes place during dinner time. None of this over there!! You will eat quietly. Animation comes later but it happens at the bar where you would be expected to consume more....Every extra is paid as a supplement....at the meal, the staff will encourage you to consume the extras as far as possible. Even a bottle of water will cost rs120. I usually went out during the day to buy my own bottles which I cannot take at meal.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. But the quality of the food, variety of the food, entertainment value is reallly well below average. This hotel doesn't deserve a 5 star. They will probably lose it if their services are reviewed again.
